The Guardians of the Galaxy were comic book heroes that not many Marvel fans knew about until the movie version opened in 2014. It was an unusual concept; a team of five, including a walking, talking tree and a raccoon saving the galaxy, but it somehow worked!

Since the success of the 2014 film, the franchise has become among the most profitable among Marvel’s properties. The sequel, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, launched on May 5 and it scored $145 million over its opening weekend. The second weekend  snagged 63 million more for a whopping  total of $630.6 million worldwide.

It seems like Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 has kicked off the summer with some impressive numbers. The next few weeks look bright for the blockbuster film. This film may pass the $1 billion mark; Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 1 came close, with $773.3 million earned in theaters.  Many other Marvel films have managed to burst past $1 billion, such as The Avengers 1 and 2, Iron Man 3, and Captain America: Civil War.
