Mexico or Congress: Who Will Pay For The Wall?

Michael Jacobsen, Editor

In last year’s presidential campaign, President-Elect Donald Trump stated Mexico would pay for the building a wall that would be positioned on the border of Mexico and the United States. He has now asked Congress to fund the wall.

Trump’s transition team asked GOP members of Congress to have them add funding for the vast project in an appropriations bill. This bill would be approved within the next few months. This move comes after Trump commented about how such a wall would be paid for during the previous campaign.

Throughout the campaign, Trump provoked the crowds into a call-and-response chant. This call-and-response chant consisted of the phrase “Build the Wall,” followed by Trump asking “Who’s going to pay for it?”.  Trump was then approved with large roars of “Mexico.”

Trump declared there are several ways to force Mexico to pay for the wall. He asserted that Mexico could reimburse the United States. Some Republicans have mentioned a 2006 law , that was signed by former President George W. Bush, that sanctioned the construction of a border wall as a reason for the funding.

The cost of construction for the border wall is estimated to cost up to $14 billion. Whomever ends up funding the wall, Mexico or Congress, will therefore affect Donald Trump’s presidency for the good or bad of the American people.
