Summer Programs in Hawthorne

The Rec Program, Tennis Program, and Hawthorne Municipal Pool open up many opportunities for kids and families to have a great, fun filled summer in Hawthorne.

The Hawthorne Borough website posted a flyer that stated that the summer Rec Program is open to all Hawthorne residents in kindergarten through eighth grade as of September 2013. The Rec Program, which operates similar to a summer day camp, runs in two-week, Monday through Friday sessions from 8:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Children in kindergarten up to fourth grade will be located at Roosevelt Elementary School; while fifth through eighth graders will be at Lincoln Middle School. Each week and location will follow the same schedule for each respective day: Mondays will be a bowling trip, Tuesdays will be a movie trip, Wednesdays are “Pizza Days,” Thursdays will include an ice-skating trip, and on Fridays the kids will receive ice pops. At pre-registration, the cost per child is $30 for a one week session, and $60 for a two-week session. If a child is registered after June 17, the costs will be $45 per week and $90 for a two week session.

For kids and teens who are interested in tennis, the Summer Tennis Program runs July 29 to August 15, Monday through Thursday mornings for children ages 7 up to 16, according  to a another flyer published on the Borough website. In this program, children will meet at the Hawthorne Tennis Courts located at the Municipal Pool to learn how to advance in their basic tennis skills. Children will be broken up into age groups based on grades as follows: second to fourth graders, fifth to seventh graders, and eighth grade up to high school. Each group will have its own respective time slot of one hour from 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. The cost is $40 per child, and participants must supply their own tennis racquet and wear sports appropriate clothes and sneakers.

In addition to these programs, the Hawthorne Borough states on its website that the Hawthorne Municipal Pool is open to residents of Hawthorne and North Haledon. Families can buy a Family Membership to the pool, which includes two people over the age of 21, and four under the age of 21 for $250. Each additional member is $30. Individual memberships for adults (19 to 64), youth (12-18), and children (three to 11) are $85, $75, and $65 respectively. All mentioned prices are reduced after July 31 to $130, $15, $45, $40, and $35. Infants under the age of three and senior citizens are free. Badge replacements cost $5 each. Additionally, residents can purchase a day pass. Proof of residence, such as a driver’s license, must be brought when purchasing membership or day pass. Minors, who may not have identification, can use a lease or rental agreement that lists all the residents, their most current report card, or a different official document listing their name and residence (in Hawthorne/North Haledon).

According to the Borough of Hawthorne website, Hawthornenj.org, the remaining registration date for the Rec and Tennis Programs is June 17 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. in the Municipal Building lobby.  Parents must bring their license and the child’s report card as proof of residence.  Pool membership may be purchased at the pool any time it is open.
