Hawthorne High School sophomore Katie Russo was named an All-American Cheerleader at the National Cheerleader’s Association cheerleading camp. To be honored with this nationally recognized title, Katie was selected as a nominee by staff members while participating in camp this past summer. Participants are selected for leadership qualities, sportsmanship, and execution of skills while attending camp. Once nominated, Katie participated in a tryout process in which only 20 participants were selected amongst a group of approximately 100 nominees. This is the second year in a row that Katie earned her a spot on the All-American Cheerleading Team, with the opportunity to participate in both the Disney Christmas Extravaganza and the London Tour. Katie participated in both, performing choreography in the Christmas parade in Disney World in 2014, as well as the New Year’s Day parade in London in 2015. When asked about her experience in London this past year, Katie said, “Cheering in the parade was like a dream come true. Being able to do what I love in another country helped make amazing memories that I will cherish forever. I am proud to have been able to represent Hawthorne High School and I am extremely grateful for the opportunity.” Katie will be attending camp again this summer in the hopes of achieving this honor again.
