Kat Sanchez and Lee Davis, Clarion Staff 2007

The Clarion is posting older articles from the years of printed newspaper. “New Faces at Hawthorne High School” was published in January of 2007. Kat Sanchez and Lee Davis wrote about four teachers in the Volume 6 Issue II paper. It has three teachers who still are seen in the halls today.

As we approach the midpoint of the year, it is a perfect opportunity to introduce those new faces that have been spotted throughout the hallways. Hawthorne HIgh School has welcomed the addition of four teachers to their faculty.

For those, who have not had the pleasure in having them as a teacher, here is a brief summary about each of the teachers, hopefully making them more welcomed and known to HHS.

Ms. Banca currently teaches Physical Education and Health for all freshmen and even has the pleasure of teaching one senior class. She graduated from William Paterson University in December of 2005, which she followed up by teaching at HAsbrouck Heights High School from January to June 2005. Ms. Banca would also like to note that her time here has been great due to the open arms of faculty and students. She, like any teacher, has a goal for the end of the school year; for her students to have as much fun as possible while still learning good sportsmanship and teamwork, that could be useful in future events. She, as well, would like to have a winning JV softball team that will be coached by her this upcoming spring. Hopefully, her goals will be met and that this year will be both a productive and rewarding year.

HHs is proud to welcome a new addition to the math department, Ms. Okul. Some of her previous teaching experiences have been in Newark at Arts High School. She has briefly mentioned that everyone, staff and students, have been gracious and forthcoming. She wants to make this year as enlightening and as prolific as possible, even though it is mathematics.

The English department, on the other hand, welcomed Ms. DiGeronimo who teaches the junior class. She has taught at both West Milford High School and DePaul High School. For the past seventeen years, she has also been an adjunct professor of English at William Paterson University. She, like all teachers, has found the students, faculty, and administration kind and welcoming. She hopes that she will be able to give back as much as she has received.  Her goal is to try to teach students that English is about communicating – through reading, writing, and speaking. Skills that are important in every aspect of life and she would like her students to gain competence and confidence in these areas. She believes that the knowledge gained in her class, will have the power to improve the quality of one’s life. It is a goal that many hope to see fulfilled.

Coming full circle, the latest addition to the science department, Mr. Zaolino, has a fervent passion for the teaching of Biology. He teaches both honors and college prep levels of the course. Through brief in the matter, he has stated that he finds HHS to his liking where he finds everyone to be kind and understanding of his sense of humor. As any biology lover, he had insinuated that his goal was to teach his students the appreciation and how it’s basic principles are incorporated in our daily lives.

Due to their headstrong goals and ardent passion for their courses, Hawthorne High School will continue to move forward. Nearing the middle of the year, the Clarion hopes that this diverse group of teachers can continue their quest for achieving their goals successfully.”
