A well known (and well paid) writer of fake news has died outside of Phoenix at the age of 38. The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office spokesman, Mark Casey on Tuesday said, authorities discovered Paul Horner dead in his bed on September 18. Casey said that the Maricopa County medical examiner hadn’t found anything strange while performing the autopsy. He also said that Horner had a history of prescription drug use and, “evidence at the scene suggested this could be an accidental overdose.”

Horner was known for writing articles during the 2016 presidential election that included false information and spreading hoaxes through the internet that often became viral on Facebook and tricking thousands of people. One of the articles included was that former President Barack Obama was gay and a radical Muslim or the one that said protesters were being paid thousands of dollars  to demonstrate at Donald Trump’s campaign rallies.

During last year’s election, and the race between Trump and Hillary Clinton, Horner was a prominent source of false stories that were widely shared through social media. During an interview with the Washington Post last year, Horner said that Trump’s supporters never fact-checked his stories before sharing them, and he believed that Trump won the election because of him.

J.J., Horner’s brother said they grew up in Minnesota before they moved to Arizona as teenagers, he said that his brother made and drew political cartoons at a young age, and developed an interest in politics. “I think he just wanted people to just think for themselves and be credible for their actions… Read more; get more involved instead of just blindly sharing things,” J.J. Horner said.

After the election Facebook and Google began to crack down on hoax websites.
