Rapper Lecrae’s New Hit Single With Ty Dolla $ign

Lecrae is a rapper who puts the real struggles of life into his songs without holding back. However, he doesn’t only make songs with just that content. Lecrae says there are answers and solutions to these problems, and he points back to his Christian faith. When people say “Christian rap”, usually his name comes into mind, as he is the most successful and well-known among those who would associate him with that genre.

Putting his faith in his music has given people a bad perspective of Lecrae, but he doesn’t really care. On January 27th, 2017, he released a new single titled “Blessings” with Ty Dolla $ign, a rap artist who makes very different music than Lecrae. Lecrae says that they had written the song long before Chance the Rapper’s reprise song of the same title with Ty Dolla $ign had been released. Although most listeners loved the song, some fans of Lecrae, and especially his haters, have been criticizing him for collaborating on this song with a secular artist, even though Lecrae doesn’t necessarily want to only be called a “Christian” rapper, due to the amount of listeners who would shy away quickly from music that is unfairly labeled “Christian rap.”

Lecrae collaborates with secular artists to build relationships with people and spread love and his faith to all types of artists and listeners, no matter who they are. He never wanted to be put into a box, even when he started doing music. He has been collaborating with artists that are not in the category of “Christian” for quite a while. His music was never filtered or sugar-coated. It has always been authentic, which is the reason why he will have many fans, and maybe even more haters.

At the end of Lecrae’s hit song, “Nuthin’ ”, Lecrae narrates, “The way I see it, we were made for more than just the simple things that we aspire toward. We were made for more than just telling stories about how much money we can get by selling poison to people. It’s time to talk about who we are and who we can be. We need to build each other up and not put each other down. I feel like we’re talking about nothing right now.”
