It was a neck and neck race, between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump, during the evening of November 8.  Trump won the election with 276 electoral votes.  Clinton had 218 electoral votes. Trump had won a majority of the swing states.

Donald Trump won Florida, which Mitt Romney lost in 2012. In the past two elections Florida was a Democratic state.  Also, Trump won Pennsylvania, which Mitt Romney also lost in 2012.  In the previous two elections, Pennsylvania was a Democratic state. The results of these two states shocked many people.
