90s Music: Pop, Country and More

The 1990s were one of the most iconic decades of the 20th century. With many famous movies, celebrities, and clothing styles, the 1990s music was indeed one of the most talked about aspects of this decade. From grunge to teen pop, the 1990s had many songs from a wide variety of genres.

Grunge music became a staple genre of the decade. The band that popularized grunge overnight with their album, Nevermind, was Nirvana. Their hit single, Smells Like Teen Spirit, changed musical history forever. Nirvana had a lot of success in the early part of the decade and then a legend was lost. The lead singer, Kurt Cobain, died in April of 1994. Although Kurt passed away and Nirvana disbanded, their music lived on and gave exposure and popularity to underground music such as grunge. Other bands such as Soundgarden and Pearl Jam also popularized grunge music along with or after Nirvana.

Country artists also produced a number of hits. Artists such as Shania Twain, Martina McBride, and Faith Hill became wildly popular with their consistent hits. Another artist who has  ongoing popularity is Billy Ray Cyrus. He released “Achy Breaky Heart” which became (and still is) a big hit.

On the opposite side of the music spectrum, the 1990s also brought a lot of popularity to pop music. Teen pop was especially popular in the latter part of the decade. Teen girl artists such as Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera became wildly popular after their hit singles. Boy bands also became more and more popular with songs that related to teenagers lives. Bands such *NSYNC and the Backstreet Boys were the two most popular boy bands at the time.

These are just a few of the many genres that were popular in the 90s.
