McGregor v. Mayweather 2017?

Jaycob Castillo, Staff Writer

UFC Lightweight champion, Conor McGregor, has officially obtained a professional boxing license in the state of California.  Recently rumors have spread that the twenty nine year old mixed-martial artist may be trading in his time in the octagon for the boxing ring in a potential bout with former boxing champion, Floyd Mayweather Jr.  Although Mayweather is currently retired, returning to the ring with the UFC champion must be very enticing for the former undefeated champion.

McGregor is coming off a KO win over Eddie Alvarez on November 12, 2016 in which he became the first person in UFC history to hold two titles simultaneously.  McGregor is currently 21-3 with his last loss coming in May of last year to Nick Diaz.  Mayweather’s last professional fight also came in May when he defeated Andre Berto in a match which many said was a bust financially, compared to the majority of his other fights.

Many believe that this fight would be the blockbuster fight of the year. According to rollingstone.com the fight could potentially bring in $100 million dollars.  Not only would it be a money maker for both sides, it could be the fairy tale ending to Mayweather’s career, or the fight that preserves McGregor’s legacy as a fighter forever.
