Rogue One Scores Massively on its Opening Weekend

Andrew Gomez, Staff Writer

Rogue One is the latest installment to the Star Wars franchise, opening last Friday, December 16. Even though it is a Star Wars film, Disney hasn’t been promoting it as much, most likely in fear of fans not wanting to see it.

However, last weekend, its opening scored the second biggest opening weekend in December’s cinematic history. As fans flocked to theaters, the film exceeded expectations, receiving mostly positive reviews, despite the fact that it has none of the Skywalker family as a main character.

The blockbuster pulled in $155 million in North American sales alone last weekend. Worldwide, it scored $290 million. This is nothing close to what The Force Awakens earned last year at this time, but Rogue One, with these numbers, has probably proved itself worthy of the rave reviews. IMDb has given both movies a score of 8.2/10. Most customer reviews of Rogue One have given a higher rating for Rogue One than The Force Awakens, ironically.

We can expect Rogue One to take in even more dough these next few weeks, due to the impressive numbers it has been pulling in. It will most likely be a very cherished movie for fans of the Star Wars franchise.
