Top 5 Memorable Infomercial Products

Melanie Liriano, Staff Writer

At one time or another we have been clicking through TV channels in the early hours of the day. There are about three things on at that time; horror movies on HBO, Great Disney movies, and infomercials. Infomercials are instantly recognizable. Horrible lighting, really stupid people, and ridiculous products, are some of the key signs. Most of those terrible products are easily forgettable, but there are a few that have left an impression on many late night viewers. It doesn’t matter if the product was good enough; all that matters is if we can easily recognize it.

  1. Snuggie– Basically a blanket with two arm holes, the Snuggie was a smash hit. Though the product is ridiculously overpriced, many Americans have one or two of them in their homes. The Snuggie comes in a variety of colors and sizes. You can stick with a plain red or blue. Or you can release your inner superhero and wear a Spiderman or Batman Snuggie.
  2. OxiClean– This product is mostly remembered for the man who advertised it. “Hi! Billy Mays here for OxiClean, the stain specialist, powered by the air you breathe, activated by the water that you and I drink” may be the only reason we remember the product.
  3. The Clapper– This product has been around so long that it has even made it into pop culture. The Simpsons have even used this product. It’s really simple. All you have to do is “Clap on, Clap off.”
  4. ShamWow – Featured on an episode of ICarly the ShamWow is a rag that doesn’t drip! Truly the only thing that is memorable about this product is that Spencer used it for an entire episode.
  5. Slap Chop– This small device chops all your vegetables with just the push of your hand. If ever the Slap Chop crosses our minds the man advertising it is what we remember most. Vance Offer’s commentary is what made this seemingly simple product memorable.
