Valentine’s Day Interesting Facts.

We all know Valentine’s Day as a holiday where couples get together and express their love for each other by buying each other gifts and spending a whole day together. We also know that Valentine’s Day for its famous icon also known as baby cupid; a cherub who has fiery red hair and wears nothing but a diaper and shoots arrows at people to make people fall in love upon contact with the arrow. But that brings up a question that really made me think. How much of that is genuinely true about the holiday? What are some cool facts about Valentines Day? But this article is going to explain some of the basic facts about Valentine’s Day and to shed a little light on the subject. Most of the facts are historical and are entertaining at the same time.

  1. Based on retail statistics about 3% of pet owners will go out and buy their own pet a Valentine’s Day gift for the holiday; gifts like new chew toys, treats, and even new pet accessories. This just goes to show how many people love their pets and how far they will go to show their love and appreciation for the four legged friends in their lives.
  2. About 1 billion Valentine’s Day cards are exchanged between couples each year. This makes the holiday a “Hallmark Holiday.” Which makes this holiday the second largest seasonal card sending time of year. But this is not the number one holiday. The number one holiday would be (of course) Christmas.
  3. In the middle ages young men and women would draw names out of a hat to see who their valentine would be that year. Then the men and women would have to pin the name onto their sleeves. Thus that began the phrase “wearing your heart on your sleeve.” Many people use that saying a lot, but I bet they do not know where the saying actually came from.
  4. More than 35 million boxes of heart shaped chocolates will be sold every year for Valentine’s Day. That is enough chocolate to last someone a couple years easily. Mr. Hershey is definitely making his money during this time of the year.
  5. Way back before any of us were around during Roman times when emperors were the ones in charge. Emperor Claudius did not want men to get married when their was a war going on. But Bishop Valentine went behind his back and performed secret weddings for people.  Claudius eventually found out and jailed Valentine for disobeying his orders. While in jail, Valentine wrote a note to the jailer’s daughter signed “from your valentine.”

So whether or not you celebrate the holiday by yourself, with your significant other, or with your pet, it does not matter. Hopefully you learned something new and interesting. No matter what happens on Valentine’s Day this year just remember that you do not need anyone to bring you chocolate or send you a card because that is not what is important. If you do not have a significant other to spend Valentines day with this year, spend it with friends. Because no matter what, they will always be there.
