Jimmy Kimmel, Warren Beatty…and the Winning Envelope

On Sunday February 26, the 89th Academy Awards were held at the Dolby Theater in Hollywood, California. The event was hosted by TV personality and talk show host Jimmy Kimmel.

There were no real surprises or upsets in the acting awards categories. As expected, Viola Davis won the best supporting actress Oscar for her role in the film “Fences”, while Mahershala Ali won best supporting actor for his role in the film “Moonlight.”

The two major acting awards, for best actress and best actor, went to Emma Stone (for “La La Land”) and Casey Affleck (for “Manchester By the Sea”) respectfully.

Damien Chazelle won the best director Oscar for “La La land.” At the tender age of 32, he is the youngest person to ever win a best director Academy Award.

The biggest surprise (and some may say only surprise) of the night, came during the final award presentation of the evening. Presenting the Best Picture Oscar, were Hollywood legends Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway. After announcing all of the nominees, a perplexed look came across Beatty’s face once the envelope was opened; that’s because Beatty and Dunaway were given the wrong envelope. Instead of stating who the winner was for the biggest award of the evening, the envelope was a duplicate of the Best Actress Award, that had been given out earlier.

So “La La Land” was incorrectly announced as the winner of best picture. The producer’s of the film ran on stage, gave acceptance speeches, and four minutes later…had to give up their Oscars to the film that really won the top prize of the night, which was “Moonlight.”

Host Jimmy Kimmel came onstage as well during the ensuing chaos and said, “I think you all should keep the awards anyway…personally, I blame Steve Harvey for this.” Kimmel was referencing Harvey’s now famous Miss Universe mistake.
