Marvel Women Finally Getting the Attention They Deserve

Over the past ten years, Marvel has seen nothing but success, with six of its eighteen wildly successful movies finding their way to the billion dollar club. It was less than two months ago that the cinematic universe’s biggest film ever dropped, Avengers: Infinity War. The film has broken countless box office records and reignited many fans’ love for these superhero films in mere weeks of its release.

Despite the cinematic universe’s financial success, along with its unwavering popularity with fans, its history shows that the universe has one fatal flaw: its lack of any female-led movies. Fortunately, the tide at Hollywood seems to be changing, and, following the success of DC’s Wonder Woman, some female-led movies may just be in Marvel’s future.

The first major female superhero to be introduced within the Marvel Cinematic Universe was Black Widow, the fan-beloved former Russian spy. First being brought into play in Iron Man 2, the character has managed to remain a major part of the universe for eight years. However, Black Widow has been robbed by Marvel due to her lack of a solo movie, which fans constantly demand from the company. While there have been glimpses of her origins in the films, Black Widow’s storyline has never been explored outside of the male-dominated Avengers. It has only been during this past year that rumors of a Black Widow movie have surfaced, and it seems as if Marvel is finally developing the superheroine’s solo movie, with a possible writer in Jac Schaeffer. Perhaps this beloved superhero will finally get her time in the spotlight, though any further information on the possible movie remains unknown.

While Black Widow’s movie quietly lingers in the future, an upcoming film may be able to fill the void of female-led movies in Marvel’s portfolio. Coming on July 6, 2018, Ant-Man and the Wasp is a sequel to the 2015 hit Ant-Man and will see the comedic superhero team up with the Wasp to fight against Ghost, a creepy new villain.

Though the film’s official lead remains Paul Rudd and his character Scott Lang, Evangeline Lilly’s Hope Pym has seemed to share equal screen-time in trailers and space on posters. Additionally, the film’s title including both superheroes’ names rather than merely being “Ant-Man 2” shows that the Wasp plays a larger role than any of us imagined. In the hearts of many, this film will finally serve as the first Marvel movie to be co-led by a female character.

A movie that is definitely coming to the Marvel Cinematic Universe is Captain Marvel, which will serve as the studio’s twenty-first overall and first female-led film. Captain Marvel will follow Carol Danvers, a U.S. Air Force pilot whose DNA becomes infused with that of aliens, giving her superhuman abilities and the power to stop the intergalactic war which Earth finds itself in the middle of. Though Captain Marvel herself has not yet been officially introduced in any of the previous Marvel films, as heroes such as Spider-Man and Black Panther were in Captain America: Civil War, her character was teased in the end credits scene of Infinity War, and her participation in future Avengers films is confirmed. This movie is definitely one to look forward to, as it will hopefully begin a trend of female-led movies at Marvel. After all, as an insider stated, “If you thought Infinity War was a game-changer, you’re not ready for what’s coming in Captain Marvel.”

So far, Black Widow’s possible movie, Ant-Man and the Wasp, and Captain Marvel remain the three female-led movies in Marvel’s roster. However, the recent popularity of many more female characters may just increase that number. Scarlet Witch has gained great popularity since her first appearance in Avengers: Age of Ultron, and Elizabeth Olsen, the character’s actress, has expressed her wishes for a “House of M” solo movie, which would explore the character’s mental breakdown and her creation of a completely new reality. Meanwhile, Black Panther’s director Ryan Coogler has stated that if the opportunity came up for a female-led spin-off, “that would be amazing.”

Thus, despite its lack of any female-led movies in the past, the attitude at Marvel seems to be changing as the possibility of numerous films loom on the horizon.
