Hubie Halloween Movie Review

Ella Perini, Staff Writer

Recently I found myself scrolling through Netflix in search of a seasonally appropriate spooky movie to get me in the Halloween spirit. In doing so, I stumbled across Hubie Halloween. For those that are unfamiliar, this 2020 Netflix film features Adam Sandler as its main character. Sandler plays Hubie Dubois, a self-proclaimed “Halloween Safety Monitor,” who is mocked and scoffed at by the entire town of Salem, Massachusetts, in which he lives. Like many of his movies, Hubie Halloween is rich in that classic Sandler slapstick comedy and charm. Is it corny? Absolutely. Are there times where you can’t quite decide if you should cringe or laugh? Definitely. But overall, this lighthearted comedy horror film is a movie I absolutely enjoyed and would watch again.

In addition to Sandler, the movie also features a star-studded cast which includes the likes of Kevin James, Kenan Thompson, Shaquille O’Neal, Maya Rudolph, Julie Bowen, and Noah Schnapp. Part of this movie’s appeal is that almost every time a new character is introduced, it is a familiar face. The recognizability of much of the cast give the movie an even greater appeal. Overall, Hubie Halloween was a movie that I thoroughly enjoyed watching. Is it going to win an Oscar anytime soon? Um no. But the movie did exactly what it was supposed to do, it made me laugh and it made me happy, and I would definitely recommend this movie to Halloween lovers of any age!
