Virtual Concerts

Virtual Concerts

The Covid-19 pandemic has affected our lives in every stretch of the word. As a result of large groups not being able to safely gather, all concerts this year have either been delayed or cancelled but recently artists have started to sell tickets for virtual concerts. All types of musicians ranging from Billie Eillish to Lil Uzi Vert or even classic acts like Metallica have announced or have already performed virtual shows; curious as to what a virtual concert would be like I bought a ticket to Joji’s The Extravaganza live streamed this past Friday, the 23rd.

The Extravaganza was hosted just about 1 month after the release of Joji’s second album Nectar. Joji performed some of his hit songs while partaking in different antics such as singing the very first song of the night Sanctuary while in a dunk tank, Run while trying to keep up on a treadmill, and Your Man while cooking an omelette. Joji also performed other fan favorites such as Slow Dancing in The Dark, Yeah Right, Gimme Love, Upgrade, and Attention. Joji even brought out superstar Justin Timberlake a few different times throughout the hour long show.

The Extravaganza experience is definitely unlike that of any in person concert. While the show featured numerous set changes and the aforementioned antics which otherwise wouldn’t be possible on a live stage setting, the viewer definitely misses out on the energy and excitement that comes with a normal, in person concert. While the virtual concert was far cheaper than an in person show, I can’t imagine people attending multiple virtual concerts as they just feel like watching a YouTube video. It’ll be interesting to see if these virtual concerts continue as artists continue to lose out on the money they would be making from touring.
