Betelgeuse…Betelgeuse….This hit Broadway musical is leaving soon!
November 7, 2022
Beetlejuice, the hit broadway musical which debuted at the Marquis Theatre on October 14 2018 has officially announced that they will be closing on January 8 of 2023.
Beetlejuice the musical is a hit broadway production that is based on the 1988 film “Beetlejuice” which starred Michael Keaton and Winona Rider. The story follows Lydia Deetz, a young nihilistic girl who is moving into a new home with her dismissive father after her mother has died suddenly. Within this home lies the spirit of a horrifying (yet hilarious) demon in a striped suit named Beetlejuice, who tries to convince Lydia to summon him so that they may get payback on her father for dismissing his wife’s death and pretending as if she never existed.
But when Lydia meets the previous owner’s deceased husband and wife, they decide to team up to give their father the fright of his life.
Beetlejuice the Musical has had a very interesting history over the past five years. When it initially came to Broadway in 2018, it was a relatively unknown and small show. This was partially due to poor marketing, but also because of the fierce competition at the time. Shows like “Dear Evan Hansen” were majorly popular before the pandemic. As a result, the show was originally planned to be closed at the end of 2020.
When quarantine occurred, the cast of Beetlejuice was put into a limbo as their contracts weren’t technically finished yet. So as the days went by, the lead actors of the time, Alex Brightman and Sophia Anne Caruso gained an astounding presence on social media through platforms like Tik Tok. Because of this exposure, the show gained a cult following due to its humor which resonated well with the newer generations.
Because of the explosion of the popularity of the musical, as soon as restrictions were lifted, the show continued its now extended run.
The years went by rather successfully, with the once underdog of a musical now one of the most anticipated shows to see on broadway. But then came a huge shock to fans of the musical. The lead actress of the musical, Sophia Anne Caruso stated abruptly that she would be leaving the production in February of 2021. This unexpected departure caused a month-long hiatus, to which the producers had to find new talent to take on her role. They did end up finding a replacement, but by then the damage was already done. Sophia Anne Caruso following wasn’t just from her acting, but also from a single she released alongside the show. People who loved her for her music were attracted to the show as a result.
Fast forward two years later, and the once internet rave of the Beetlejuice fandom has died down as they began to lose traction in America. The show’s superb quality remained, but the online success wasn’t translating well into ticket sales.
This story isn’t one with a sad ending.Recently, the directors of Beetlejuice have declared that the show will be doing an international tour around the world, with the last Broadway production in NY scheduled to be on January 8 2023.
With that being said, make sure to show your love and support for the wonderful cast by coming to see this action-packed comedy wrapped in a wholesome message about the importance of grief and love in our daily lives.
