Hollywood has released some of the most anticipated sequels and continuations of series’, from Top Gun Maverick in May to Scream 5 in January. This was a very successful year for the box office after taking a major hit due to COVID-19.  2022, had movies that we’ll never forget. This article is 1 of 2 articles highlighting a top movie from January to June. 2 of 2 will highlight the months from July to December. Without further ado, here are the top movies from 2022.

 

January: On January 14 Scream 5 was released 11 years after Scream 4. Starring Jenna Ortega, Skeet Ulrich, Courteney Cox, and Jack Quaid. Scream 5 earned 140 million dollars at the box office, making it the second lowest box office within the five Scream movies after Scream 4. Scream 5 was nominated for a People’s Choice Award for Favorite Dramatic Movie, but didn’t win. Scream 5 shows Sam returning to Woodsboro with her boyfriend Richie to visit Tara at the hospital, Sam is then reunited with Tara’s group of friends. That same night Liv’s ex-boyfriend Vince is killed by Ghostface. 

 

February: On February 18, Dog was released. Starring Channing Tatum and a temperamental German Shepherd. Dog earned 85 million dollars at the box office. Dog was not nominated for any awards.Dog is about an Army Ranger who is tasked with escorting the k-9 dog of his fallen friend to his funeral. The dog LuLu is severely traumatized after being in war and gets agitated easily. She sent three people to the hospital and was deemed “unsalvageable” for any further use. Tatum’s character gets tasked with being the escort for traveling with LuLu and going on an adventure neither will forget. 

 

March: On March 1, Disney released Turning Red. Starring Jordan Fischer, Anne Marie, and FINNEAS. Turning Red earned 20.1 million dollars at the box office, but continues to grow in popularity on the Disney’s streaming site, Disney+. Turning Red received the Golden Globe nomination for Best Motion Picture- Animated. Turning Red is about a girl named Meilin Lee. Meilin is going through the awkward phase of a young girl’s adolescence in a fun and awkward way. The movie takes place in Toronto, Canada in the year 2002. 

 

April: On April 8, Sonic the Hedgehog: 2 hit theaters by storm. Starring Jim Carrey, Ben Schwartz, and Tika Sumpter. It made 402.7 million dollars at the box office. After the first film came out in 2020, the sequel was much anticipated. Sonic the Hedgehog: 2 is about Sonic wanting to prove he has what it takes to be a hero. His test comes when Dr. Robotnik returns with a new partner, Knuckles, in search of a mystical emerald that has the power to destroy civilizations.

 

May: On May 27 the highly anticipated sequel of Top Gun was released, starring Tom Cruise as his original character Maverick. The first Top Gun was released on May 16, 1986. Top Gun earned a whopping 357.3 million dollars at the box office. Top Gun: Maverick topped it by 1.454 billion dollars. Top Gun: Maverick showcases Goose’s son, Rooster who enlisted in the navy as a naval pilot like his father. Maverick and Rooster have a rocky relationship the majority of the movie. Maverick and Rooster come together to get back onto the cruise carrier to bring them home after a dangerous mission. The 36 year gap between the two movies created much desired anticipation between generations alike. From people who sat in the theater in 1986, to the younger generations who sat in the theater in 2022. This movie was one of the more generational inclusive movies this year.

 

June: On June 24, the movie based on the King of Rock and Roll was released. Elvis earned 286 million dollars at the box office. Elvis Presley was played by Austin Butler and his performance in Elvis earned him a nomination in the Golden Globes for Best Actor- Motion Picture- Drama. Elvis was active during 1953 to 1977, his genre focus was rock and roll, pop, rockabilly, country gospel, and R&B blues. Elvis was notorious for his bright outfits, Elvis also notoriously got in trouble by the press for his quirky movements. Elvis sold 139 million records of music and his music continues to be sold. Elvis is a timeless artist, and he’ll never go out of style.
