The time has come, one of the biggest girl groups in the world is celebrating ten years together, all nine members are still together, the lineup unchanged. Nayeon, Jeongyeon, Momo, Sana, Jihyo, Mina, Dahyun, Chaeyoung, Tzuyu.
TWICE was formed through a survival show by the name of Sixteen. Yes, that means there were Sixteen girls, fighting to earn their spots in this up and coming girl group under one of the biggest companies in K-Pop, JYP Entertainment.
At that time the spots they were fighting for were only 7: only at the end were two members added in making the complete 9 that we know today. These 9 girls would one day become known as “The Nation’s Girl Group.”
The girls have been through many struggles over the years. Despite them being legends in the K-Pop realm now, everyone starts out as a rookie. Although, they always fought and came out on top, and that really shows through their years of work and countless awards.
There was a time when one member Sana was going through a rough time, and one of the group’s producers JYP (also the old CEO of JYP Entertainment their company) saw how the members comforted and helped her through it. So he wrote the song “Feel Special” for them. He even framed the lyrics and gave them as a gift to Sana.
At the same time another member, Mina, was also going through struggles. It was announced in July 2019 that she would be going on temporary hiatus and would not participate in the world tour as she was dealing with extreme anxiety. Despite being on hiatus from performances and appearances, she recorded and filmed for the “Feel Special” music video and song which was then released September 23, 2019. Mina eventually returned a few months later and joined in on the Japan leg of the tour.
Now to the beloved member Jeongyeon, who has had two hiatuses. The first being in 2020 and the second being in 2021. She first paused activities in 2020 due to a herniated disc surgery, and in 2021 for panic and anxiety disorders.
This was a rough time for ONCE (the band’s followers) worldwide, but even harder for the members and Jeongyeon herself. Member Jihyo, the leader of the group, stated herself “I thought I might lose my friend. That’s how bad it was.” Though, through the love and support of her fellow members, her staff, family, and fans, Jeongyeon was able to power through and come back to the spotlight.
