This year, sci-fi and horror movie lovers have already been shocked by the film that was released late this January. Starring and directed by Mark Fischbach, who is better known to his millions of fans online as Markiplier, the movie Iron Lung was released in theaters on January 30th of this year.
At the box office the movie became four out of the five top-grossing movies earlier this month. The movie has also made over $30 million against its $3 million dollar budget.
This indie horror film is based on the intense claustrophobic video game of the same name, which was created by American game developer David Szymanski. The film stars Markiplier himself, which adds a personal touch to the movie because of Markiplier’s thousands of videos he uploads to YouTube of him just playing different types of indie horror games, which I’m sure his fans can appreciate.
Iron Lung focuses on the psychological horror of being trapped in a small, creaking submarine with very limited visibility outside of the ship. The story revolves around exploring the unknown and facing the horrors that lurk in the dark, bloody waters. The movie is set in a scary and sad future where humanity’s last hope lies in exploring the eerie, blood red oceans. The plot of the movie centers on the crew’s mission to uncover all the mysteries in the dark red ocean and all of the characters are all cramped in these outdated submarines and are only armed with tools they find on the ship.
Iron Lung stands out due to its amazing practical effects and its minimalistic approach that shows us the sense of isolation and dread that the characters are constantly going through. Markiplier’s dedication to bring this small indie video game to life has his fans excited to his unique take on the horror genre. The movie not only showcases his creative mind by taking the concept of being stuck on a submarine and turning it into a scary and suspenseful movie. This movie also shows the potential of having video games as a source material to make amazing films for everyone to enjoy.
