The Academy Awards are among the most prestigious honors in the film industry, recognizing artistic and technical excellence each year. Presented by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the awards have played a major role in celebrating cinema for decades.
Since 2002, the ceremony has been held at the Dolby Theatre (formerly known as the Kodak Theatre) in Hollywood. The venue, which seats about 3,400 people, was specifically designed for the Oscars and reflects the style and glamour of Hollywood’s golden age.
However, it was recently announced that the Oscars will move to the Peacock Theater in downtown Los Angeles beginning in 2029. While the change is still a few years away, preparations are already underway. The Academy has stated that the Peacock Theater will undergo “comprehensive enhancements” as part of a new agreement with AEG, which owns the L.A. Live complex.
The Peacock Theater is already a well-known venue, having hosted the Primetime Emmy Awards since 2008. As part of the move, the Oscars red carpet is expected to be set near the L.A. Live plaza, including areas close to popular dining spots like Yard House.
In addition to the venue change, the Oscars will also expand their accessibility by becoming available to stream on YouTube starting in 2029. The ceremony will continue to air on ABC through 2028, including the milestone 100th Academy Awards. The transition to streaming and the new location will begin with the 101st ceremony, marking a new chapter for the historic event.
While the move represents a significant shift, it also reflects how the Oscars continue to evolve with changing times, blending tradition with modern accessibility.
