New braking technology has been seen in multiple newly manufactured cars, from the Audi to the Mercedes. But the Ford Motor Company’s newest braking technology is different from the other companies; it is not for when you are approaching an object, but for when you are speeding.
The new technology is called the Intelligent Speed Limiter, which will allow drivers to set a maximum speed that they cannot go over. Additionally, the car has a windshield mounted camera installed to detect and read speed limit signs. The speed limit then appears on the speedometer, and the car will not exceed that speed limit. If necessary, the driver has the option to go over the limited speed, simply by holding the accelerator down.
Additionally, if the car exceeds the speed limit, it will alert the driver, rather than automatically applying the brakes. Fords that have an onboard navigation system will be linked to the Intelligent Speed Limiter, and can limit the speed that may not be posted on suburban streets, but will appear on the navigation system. Ford already has many autonomous technologies such as Collision Warning, Pre-Collision Warning, Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Keeping, Active Park Assist, and Blind Spot Information System.
This new technology will be premiering on the Ford S-Max, a minivan that started selling in Europe in 2006. Ford recently released a statement saying, “The S-MAX Intelligent Speed Limiter technology will launch only in Europe for now, but it could eventually migrate to the U.S. in the future.” It may be years before it comes to the U.S., but it will definitely reduce the amount of speeders and accidents caused by speeding.
