The Apollo 11 Moon Landing- One Giant Leap to Lies

Aliysha Malone, Staff Writer

Almost fifty years after America made the historic first landing on the moon, the famous phrase, “That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind,” still rings through our minds from time to time. However, recently, people are questioning the authenticity of the event. What if the moon landing was staged and it was all a hoax?

How many people believe that the moon landing was staged?

In 1999, The Gallup poll found that only six percent of American citizens questioned the legitimacy of the Apollo 11 moon landing. However, the percentage now is about twenty percent of doubting Americans.

Why do people believe this conspiracy theory?

Many people believe that the United States thought it was crucial to win the space race with Russia and that was necessary to take any means to do so; in this case, faking the moon landing. Skeptics started noticing clues that made the whole situation feel “off.” For example, in the televised film there was an absence of stars in the lunar sky. Many also realized that it was virtually impossible for astronauts to pass through Van Allen Radiation Belts, which are a collection of charged particles gathered in place by Earth’s magnetic field. Perhaps the most convincing argument is that when the American flags were waving on the ground from “wind,” it was actually physically impossible for there to be any wind on the moon. This is because there is no gravity on the moon, thus, it is impossible for the flags to naturally ripple.

Now that you’ve heard the theory…what do you believe?
