Benefits of Elderberry

Nick DeLuca, Staff Writer

With Covid cases reaching all-time highs, people are constantly looking for different ways to boost their immune system to protect themselves. Being one of those people, I have also been looking for ways to stay healthy, and one of the ways is by taking elderberry daily.

Before listing off the benefits of elderberry, it is important to note that the scientific name is ‘Sambucus’ which you may have heard of over the past year. Not only do these berries provide strong antioxidant properties, they also act as a good source of Vitamin C. Studies have shown that if you take elderberry extract while having flu or cold symptoms, it can shorten the length of the illness and prevent it from getting worse.

Although scientists are still conducting research, other possible benefits of elderberry may be its antidepressant properties, cancer preventing properties, and it’s positive effects on the heart. Even though these are POSSIBLE health benefits, one could assume that it would be in their best interest to start taking this. Whether it be in the form of a pill, or elderberry syrup (which has the highest concentration of it) taking elderberry could be used as a great preventative measure this upcoming flu season.
