In 1977, John Travolta was seen on every big screen and poster everywhere. Selling 25 million copies in under a decade, the movie, Saturday Night Fever, was a box office hit.
The story begins with Tony Manero (John Travolta) who still lives at home and works as a paint store clerk in his Brooklyn, N.Y., neighborhood. Although it sounds like he leads a boring life, he comes alive on the weekends, when he and his friends go to the local disco and dance an endless night away. After a big dance competition is announced, he summons the beautiful and talented Stephanie (Karen Lynn Gorney) to be his partner. As the two non-stop train for the big night, they start to fall for each other.
The movie was helped along by the outstanding soundtrack, with the majority of the songs being performed by the Bee-Gees. Their perfect nightlife disco brought this movie to unbelievable heights. The song line up includes:
Stayin’ Alive – Bee Gees
How Deep is Your Love – Bee Gees
Night Fever – Bee Gees
More Than A Woman – Bee Gees
If I Can’t Have You – Yvonne Elliman
You Should Be Dancing – Bee Gees
Boogie Shoes – KC and the Sunshine Band
This movie extraordinaire helped the genre of disco around the world and initiated a series of collaborations between film studios and record labels. Without this film, disco had the probability of dying. If the Bee Gees never agreed to apply such music to the films their name would have disappeared and they could possibly have never reached heights like 5 Grammy Awards just from the movie alone. The Bee Gees have sold over 120 million records worldwide, placing them at around the best-selling musical artists of all time, as well as the most successful trio in the history of music.
