Students all around the world deal with school work, and an outside of school life. In life there has to be a balance between things. Now I’m not saying that school should be boycotted and everyone should stop attending school, but there needs to be a healthy balance between regular life and regular responsibilities.
Most kids partake in extracurricular activities, and don’t have as much free time as other students. Now that isn’t a reason to not be successful, but it is a good reason why students feel overwhelmed. Some teachers might hold students to an unrealistic standard expecting too much. Now some students might try and challenge themselves by taking accelerated classes like Honors or AP, but even then there must be a balance.
A study from transformingeducation.org showed that 94% of college students feel overwhelmed, 75% of high school students feel overwhelmed, and 50% of middle school students feel overwhelmed.
There’s more than just the academic struggle though, some students deal with mental health troubles: transformingeducation.org showed that 44% of college students experience depression, 41% of college students experience anxiety. 57% of female students report overwhelming anxiety, compared to 40% of male students.
Student stress is something that needs to be attacked as a group and not as one person. With help not only students, but normal everyday people can change how they approach their day to day lives.
Ultimately, reducing student stress requires efforts from schools, families, and students themselves. They need to create environments where they can balance responsibilities along with their emotional well being. Helping students today, will make improved ones tomorrow.
