Students and teachers have most of the first week of November off. Every. Single. Year. Why? Well, let’s tap into that.
Each year New Jersey has something called “teachers convention.” The teachers convention is held in Atlantic City’s convention center. This is where teachers and educators share ideas, go to prep workshops, and see international speakers.
This is always optional for teachers, though many school districts close for teachers wanting to attend. The annual teachers convention occurs usually around the first Thursday and Friday of November. This year it’s happening during November 6 and 7.
Students in the Hawthorne district also have off on Tuesday, November 4. This is due to election day. We close schools because voting occurs in every building. Strangers, parents, and other adults, walk around the building to vote. It’s unsafe to run school when unknown people are in the building. Most families go on vacation and travel during this week, as there’s only 2 days of school.
