During the month of March, The Hawthorne High School Library Media Center has been full of different events, activities and new displays.
The Library has put out a display of books acknowledging Woman’s History Month, from which students can learn about women in history who have been inspiring, innovative and imaginative since this year’s theme is “Women inspiring innovation though imagination.”
The Library also has a new 8-volume set of encyclopedias entitled Food and Nutrition on display and Nutrition and Fitness to celebrate National Nutrition Month.
To honor Music in our Schools Month, the Library Media Center now has a new encyclopedic set entitled Teaching through Performance in Band, requested by music teacher Rob Dubois. There has also been a new book donated by alumni Mike Baron, Class of 2008, entitled Music Business Handbook. The March Trivia Contest continues the celebration of music by asking: “What was the first song to be sung in outer space?” This time the winner will receive a $10 gift card for iTunes.
For Irish Heritage Month there is a display featuring a variety of books including Penguin’s Guide to Ireland, Myths and Folklore of Ireland, Irish Cooking, and Modern Irish Literature.
The Library is also welcoming the spring sports with a display of baseball books including: Baseball Dictionary, Game Day: My Life on and off the Field, Steinbrenner, The Last Lion of Baseball, Baseball Encyclopedia, The Mental Game of Baseball, Rules of Baseball, Great Moments in Baseball and more. Many of these books have been donated by Hawthorne High School alum Joe DiGeronimo who graduated in 2003 and went to play baseball for the Baltimore Orioles.
For HHS seniors who are in the process of applying for financial aid for their post-high school education, the library is offering books that assist in finding aid and scholarships. The directions for filling out Free Application for Federal Student Aid forms are also available.
Meanwhile, on March 20, the Media Center will attempt to raise awareness about the dangers of smoking, featuring books and posters on the subject. With these actions, the Library will be participating in national Kick Butts Day, a campaign for tobacco-free kids.
In the Reading Lounge Café there are two new exhibits in the Student Art Gallery. A collection of eight impressionistic paintings by Danielle Russo’s Art II students include works by: Molly O’Hea, Steve Sorrento, Jackelin Joa, Noshin Chowdury, Nick Cramer, Renee Vitole, Alex Guarnieri and Emily Provencher.
There are also 38 typography projects from Joey Carradori’s Graphic Design classes entitled “A Play On Words.”Each project illustrates typography by changing it so it describes a meaning of a word. The students participating in the exhibit are Breyanna Apolito, Samantha Borrero, Thomas Bushnauskas, Austin Carpennter, John Castellvi, Andrew Courtney, Nicole Crilly, Chris DeVito, Samantha Gonzalez, Ricky Grofsick, George Innocenti, Xhorxhina Kokonozi, kelvin laquindanum, carli Manga, Gabriel marroquin, Daneil McAvoy, Alexis Miele, Jorge Mendoza, Kristin Miyamato, Sarah Ritchie, Brandon Rodrigues, Caroline Schmmenti, caroline Shuart, Michael Sung, Adam Tanz, Michael Thomas, Chrissy Torres and Jared Van Houten.
The Library also has a variety of new books to offer Hawthorne High School students, most of which are donations. How to Get Money for College, Tony Hawk, Spiderman: Doom with a View, and Human Trafficking: A Global Perspective are few of the fifty new books added to the book collection in March.
