Our World CAN Get Better: Where Change Starts

Andrew Gomez, Staff Writer

Violence. Corruption. Racism. Division. It’s all fueled by one thing: hate and not being able to accept others. Martin Luther King, Jr was the core of the Civil Rights Movement, which was meant to stop racism and segregation in America. We are all people, who bleed the same color inside, but we instead choose to judge each other by something as silly as the color of our skin. And it’s not only that, but Martin Luther King, Jr also once said, “I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character.” Even still, we choose to think that because we have different values, beliefs or personalities, that means that we should judge people. You see, there is a solution to all the chaos that the world is spinning into, even though we may think we cannot escape it.

So let’s pull back a little first… We want the ENTIRE WORLD to change, right? We think there is so much corruption in the world, but we don’t see that the corruption is living inside of us. We hate how people only want more and more money from everyone, but most of us dream of becoming rich and famous, and listen to music that is all about building a money empire! And after that, we’ll only want even more money, right? We hate how racism still exists, but we laugh at memes with racist jokes and allow racial stereotypes to poison our mindset.

We love to entertain ourselves with stupid horror movies and stuff all about killing, but are outraged when a police involved shooting occurs. The rapper Bizzle says, “we try to put a stop to it, then we love to glorify murder till a cop do it?” What hypocrites we are! We never let our thoughts and opinions determine what we live by. If you want your lifestyle to be of hate, then no one is stopping you, but guess what? No change is happening in the world. We will only see change in the world if we first change ourselves!

How do we change ourselves? Some of us think we are in a place where there is literally no hope, and there is such an oppressive depression that we can’t ever escape it, except through death. I’m here to tell you otherwise. Change is right at the door. Love is the answer.

Yeah, you can go ahead and say that there are circumstances between you and your enemies that you just can’t forgive. But if we are seeking true love every day of our lives and think we can find it through our own ways (like social media, as if that ever worked), then I think we should all know that true love comes from being patient, and not letting circumstances get in the way of our lives. That’s why the world is in the crisis that it is now. We did not learn to love.

This is what the world is filled with now: envy, boasting, pride, dishonor, getting easily angered, delighting in evil, keeping records of  wrongs, and seeking after our own desires, and not caring about others’ needs or feelings.  This is NOT what REAL love is! And even still, we think we deserve a change in the world, as we go about our self-seeking ways, hating others, not forgiving anyone. And let me not forget that we can’t choose two sides; both of wanting to judge others, and seek after ourselves, but say we respect everyone. That makes no sense.

As I mentioned before, true love is the answer. We need to get rid of all those things that are listed above and start living a different kind of life, not based on what others do or look like, but seeing everyone as people who have a great purpose for their lives. It’s the key to resolving the issues of not only our lives, not only the perspective of our circumstances, relationships, and things we are going through, but it is the key to resolving every issue in this world. Once we start giving unconditional love (instead of always trying to receive it, but not actually getting it at all), we will see a change in our world. So no matter what happens in this world, we can be sure that true love is the resolution to our perspective of what happens, and we will find wholesome peace and joy. It will change all of our lives for sure, even if the world gets worse.
