Yankees to Retire Jeter’s Number

Jack Ponticelli, Staff Writer

The New York Yankees have announced that they will retire longtime Yankee and former captain Derek Jeter’s number 2 before a game against the Houston Astros on May 14, 2017.

Jeter last played for the team in the 2014 season in which he batted .256 with 4 home runs and 50 runs batted in. In total he spent twenty-two years as a New York Yankee and is their all-time leader in hits and games played.

He was a fourteen time All-Star and the American League Rookie of the Year in 1996. After the future Hall of Famer’s number is retired, the Yankees will no longer have any single-digit number available to wear, becoming the first team to do such a thing.

Congratulations to Derek Jeter on an amazing career and a very well deserved honor.
