Nixle: Hawthorne’s New Information Service

Hawthorne is now offering Nixle to all Hawthorne residents.  Nixle is a community information service that sends residents email and text messages about local information.  Emergencies, police alerts and notices about community events, public services and local government activity, are examples of messages one may receive by signing up for the service online.

To apply for a Nixle account, residents can go to Hawthornenj.org or to the Nixle website at Nixle.com .  One can also apply for Nixle by texting a “key word” for a specific group to 888777 from a cell phone.  One group involved in Nixle is Main Hawthorne Wire (key word: HawthWire); in this group, one may receive messages about emergencies, police alerts, local public services, etc.  The second group is called Hawthorne Community Events (key word: HawthEvents); this group sends messages about Hawthorne Day, parades, and local events.  The third Nixle group is Hawthorne Youth Programs (key word: HawthYouth); it includes messages about programs for the local youth and children.  The fourth is Hawthorne Government (key word: HawthGovt ); this group will send messages about local government meetings, hearing and actions.

There are optional features within each group; for example, a resident can choose how to receive different types of messages depending on the level of urgency.   One can also choose to receive messages from other agencies in the area.
