Garland and the fish he rescued

In a strange turn of events, local Hawthorne man, Harp Garland, 65, rescued a fish from drowning at the Goffle Brook Park this past weekend.

Garland, a lifelong resident of Hawthorne, said the incident occurred at around 6 PM this past Saturday.

“I was doing my usual nightly walk,” said the proud Garland, “when I heard something weird coming from the brook…a whee whee sound…almost like a cry for help.”

According to Garland, he rushed to the brooks edge, where he saw this small fish flailing away. He knew the fish was in trouble.

“I jumped in the brook,” stated Garland, “and I grabbed that poor fishy with my hands and scooped him up.”

Garland then performed the life saving technique known as mouth to fish mouth resuscitation.

“I knew the fish was better when he said to stop.” Added Garland.

In these crazy times, it’s nice to live in a town like Hawthorne, where everyday citizens are willing to risk their lives to save others.
