Lidl Coming to Hawthorne

Maria Nunez, Staff Writer

Lidl is a German international discount retailer chain that operates over 12,000 stores across Europe and the United States. Lidl promises a limited selection of high-quality, brand-agnostic products at discount prices, and an unfussy shopping experience…and it is coming soon to Hawthorne.

Lidl, a German grocer gaining a new foothold in the U.S., will build a market at the site of a former gas station on Wagaraw Road. Lidl will be the first grocery store in Hawthorne since Grand Union shut down on Lafayette Avenue in 1982. Lidl opened its first store in Ludwigshafen, Germany, in 1973, expanding about 20 years later to France and then England. The chain now has 11,550 stores in 30 European countries, Hong Kong, and nine states on the East Coast.

The Lidl market will be situated at the traffic light where Wagaraw Road ends and turns into Goffle Road. Timing of the four-way signal will be readjusted for shoppers entering and exiting the store’s parking lot.

There isn’t an official date that the store will be open, but it will be coming to Hawthorne soon.
