The month of October is Breast Cancer and Domestic Abuse Awareness Month.
Breast Cancer, professionally called “Breast Carcinoma” is a cancer that forms in the breast, creating a lump, which is mainly seen in women. There are more than 200,000 cases a year, if left untreated then it could spread and become worse for the person. Breast Cancer Awareness began in October 1985, it started through a partnership between the American Cancer Society and Imperial Chemical Industries.
The main reason we try to support Breast Cancer Awareness is because it is helping people become more aware of what other people are going through and it also shows that we (as a community) are here for anyone going through it, and that we are here to show them our support. It can help many women understand the signs of Breast Cancer and to remind them to get checked for it just in case.
Domestic Abuse Awareness month is also in October. Domestic Abuse is more commonly known as Domestic Violence. The definition for it is; “n. Violent or aggressive behavior within the home, typically involving the violent abuse of a spouse or partner.” There are more than 12 million men and women that have reported being abused in the span of one year. In October 1981 it had become the national “Day of Unity” which had then been changed to DVAM (Domestic Violence Awareness Month).
Domestic abuse can be physical, but it can also be sexual, emotional, mental, and physiological. October is the month where we can be made aware and learn more about it, instead of just hearing or knowing what it is.We are able to possibly take action and change what is happening. Many people who are abused do not come forward: but throughout this month, we can reassure people that we are there for them. Survivors are able to talk about what they went through and their experiences as well.
Therefore, throughout this month, we should take the time to care and think about our own health and get regular checkups on everything, men and women. We should also take the time to talk to a loved one or seek help if you are in any type of danger or abusive relationship.
