HHM/Hispanic Heritage Month is a widely celebrated time period starting on 9/15 and ending on 10/15. This yearly celebration is a way for the Hispanic community to express the love for their heritage loud and proud. While HHM has just sadly ended, the history of how it was created might surprise you!
Before HHM had become more celebrated, Hispanic culture was not deemed important internationally. The Hispanic community had to work hard to get global attention as Hispanic music, style, and stories were not understood.
The origin of HHM started in 1968, a 7 day period as it was observed by late President Lyndon Johnson. Some time after, HHM was then expanded by another late President Ronald Reagan in 1988. This expansion took a 7 day period to a 30 day period which was a big accomplishment at this time. On August 17, 1988, Hispanic Heritage month was enacted into law, on the approval of Public Law 100-402.
