This year, Halloween fell on a Thursday, so while most younger kids would celebrate solely on that day, teens and young adults have celebrated the holiday both the weekend before, and the weekend after. This allows for multiple costumes and everyone got very creative this year.
Trending Costumes: My favorite costumes are the ones that are relevant and follow what is trendy. Now that is not to say that you can’t still have a very good costume even if it is a little outdated, but it is more exciting when the costume makes sense for the time period. Also, a timely costume doesn’t have to mean that you dress as something basic or overhyped, you can still find niche references and individuality in what’s trendy.
There were a wide variety of relevant costumes that were trending this year. The most popular were Beetlejuice and Shrunken Head Bob, Sabrina Carpenter, Inside Out characters, Deadpool or Lady Deadpool, Minions, Carrie Bradshaw, “Glinda” and “Elphaba”, Dune, Gambit, Wolverine, Strawberry Shortcake and Friends, a Chipotle Burrito, and the Joker. Most of these costumes stemmed from popular films that came out recently. Those were the most popular costumes in terms of the young adult population. Teenagers and children, while some like to choose a relevant costume, care less about the timeliness of their choice.
A Hawthorne Halloween: Of the students of Hawthorne High School, popular costumes for teenage girls were The Wizard of Oz characters, animals (black cats, cheetahs, lions), cops and prisoners, Wonder Woman and Batwoman, mermaids and sirens, the Joker and Harley Quinn, the Chipettes, and witches. Some costumes the teenage boys at HHS wore were Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story characters, cops and prisoners, Alvin and the Chipmunks, minions, vampires, firefighters, mechanics, sailors, and of course, wearing creepy masks are always a Halloween staple.
Social media is a huge part of our lives and is all around us. People usually end up having the same Halloween costumes as others in their age group because we all follow and see the same trends online. The people who wanted to make sure they didn’t have the same costume as someone else chose a more unique idea. A few unique, funny, and relevant costumes from this past Halloween were Moo Deng and Pesto, Sonny Angels, Kamala and Trump, and the SNL Bridesmaids and Domingo.
I hope you all had a great Halloween and are enjoying every last bit of your leftover candy!
