October has passed and Halloween has passed along with it.
This Halloween was, however, very different from other years. Trick or treating has become quite rare, with less trick or treaters showing up as the years go by and the change has been especially noticeable after the Covid-19 pandemic and the rise of Trunk or Treating.
Many homes giving out candy have said they received less or even no trick or treaters compared to other years. Even those who did choose to go trick or treating were met with no answer at doors, even if their porch lights were on. In 2023, a poll found that 3/4 of people say there have been fewer trick or treaters from previous years. That number is even less this year, and the most likely cause is Trunk or Treating gaining more popularity.
These numbers sadden those who celebrate Halloween, as they recall how filled the streets used to be years before this decline. Those who got excited to hand out candy were met with the disappointment of receiving little to no kids trick or treating, recalling how popular it was when they were that age. Is this officially the downfall of trick or treating as we know it? Or will people try to keep this tradition alive the next time Halloween comes around?
