Students Tour New York City’s Fifth Ave Library

Students of the Hawthorne High School Creative Writing Club as well as the English III Honors classes visited New York City on a trip to see the New York Public Library’s 100th Anniversary Exhibit.

A guided tour of the library on 5th Avenue was provided for the students. A few of the pieces of historic literature shown to the students were Sumerian cuneiform tablets from 2300 BC, the Gutenberg Bible, Ernest Hemingway’s handwritten Nobel Prize acceptance speech, George Washington’s farewell address in his own handwriting, Thomas Jefferson’s draft of the Declaration of Independence, Mark Shelley’s first edition of Frankenstein, Russian language edition of Karl Marx’s Das Kapital, Virginia Woolf’s walking stick, Malcolm X’s briefcase and diary, Dante’s Divine Comedy, an early edition of Shakespeare’s King Lear, and a hand-edited manuscript of Richard Wright’s Native Son.

“I feel this was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see the archive collection of on the world’s most notable public libraries,” saidHawthorneHigh Schoolteacher and trip chaperone, Theresa DiGeronimo. “I had seen the exhibit myself a few months ago, and just couldn’t wait to share the experience with my students.”

As well as the library tour, students spent time holiday shopping, enjoying foods and ice skating inNew York’s Bryant Park.

“The whole trip was enjoyable, but I have to say touring the library itself was my favorite part! I didn’t know in a city with so much technology that a building with such classic charm still existed!” said Hawthorne High School Junior, Steven Prieto.
