The Hawthorne Domestic Violence Response Team presented assemblies at Hawthorne High School on Friday, October 26, 2012 for junior and senior students.
Seniors gathered in the auditorium for an introduction by Sergeant John Carbone, the Hawthorne Police Department Domestic Violence Liaison Officer, to the subject of domestic violence. Carbone explained that domestic violence is the highest unreported crime in the nation despite the fact that four women die every day in the country as a result of domestic violence. Carbone then introduced a representative of the Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office who continued the discussion and introduced the one-woman play Yellow Dress.
Junior students attended the second assembly to watch a three-person play about dating violence called “Remote Control.”
To help students further explore the topic of domestic violence, the Library Media Center has created a display of the variety of books available on family violence, dating violence, child abuse date rape and more.
