The 2012 Hawthorne High School Bears varsity volleyball season was a fantastic one. This year the girls had a winning record of 14-9, bringing the team to the quarterfinals of the Group 1 State Tournament. “Our team did extremely well this season,” said head coach Laura Mazzacca. “There were a few rough spots, but overall I am extremely proud of the girls and all of their hard work.”
According to Coach Mazzacca, the highlight of the girls’ season was their win over Glen Rock in the second round of States. Glen Rock beat Hawthorne twice in the regular season and ending up winning the League with only one loss. “It was a huge accomplishment to go into the game with confidence and motivation and to come out successful,” said Mazzacca.
The varsity team players earned a number of post-season honors. All-League honors for 1st Team All-County went to Jessica Chamberlin and Renee Buchanan and 2nd Team honors were awarded to Allison Jewett. Carly Ten Kate received honorable mention.
During the off season, Mazzacca hopes to increase the number of girls participating in club volleyball or volleyball clinics. Other schools that the Lady Bears compete against play volleyball all year round, which gives them an advantage over HHS.
“Last year we did well during the County Tournament and this year we did well during the State Tournament,” explained Mazzacca. “Next year, I am looking forward to being a competitive team in both tournaments.”
The Lady Bears keep improving their skills every year, with this year being no exception.
