The second annual Mr. Hawthorne event returns on March 7, 2013 in Hawthorne High School’s auditorium.
Mr. Hawthorne is a light-hearted, fun-filled event that gives boys at HHS a chance to have a great time embarrassing themselves in an attempt to be named Mr. Hawthorne. Former vice-principal, Patrick McQueeney, may have not stayed long; however, he definitely left his mark by giving the idea for Mr. Hawthorne to art teacher and student activity adviser, Danielle Russo, during the 2011-2012 school year. Russo took the concept proposed by McQueeney, added her own ideas, and turned it into Mr. Hawthorne
The audience will see different boys from different social groups competing to be crowned Mr. Hawthorne. Whether he is the lead-role in the upcoming HHS musical, Singing in the Rain, or a wrestler going to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill on a scholarship, audience members will witness different talents from students one would never expect to see. Russo also touched upon why someone should see the show, “The reason for the show is to do something fun, other than fundraising and public speaking; it’s kids being kids, and nobody ever gets to see the goofy sides and true personalities behind the students. With Mr. Hawthorne you get that.”
When speaking to Russo, she spoke on what it takes to be Mr. Hawthorne. “The student must have an outgoing personality, a good character, some school spirit, and really has to be okay with making fun of himself, because that is what Mr. Hawthorne is all about.” Russo also mentioned her favorite part of the show is the dancing segment.
When asked about competing in the competition, senior Ricky Grofsick, said, “I have more nerves for Mr. Hawthorne than I do when I’m out on the field, [because] I’m in a different comfort zone.”
Mr. Hawthorne contestants are as followed: Seniors, Nick Adesso, Christopher Altemus, Edward Davies, Ryan Gordon, Ricky Grofsick, Juan Guido, Ethan Ramos, and Hakan Sadik. Juniors, Justin Charles, Kevin Mckeown, and Dustin Scully.
