Hawthorne High School’s AP Chemistry class, under the supervision of teacher Marissa Wentworth, attended a Seminar at William Paterson University on December 5, 2013.
During the seminar, students were able to ask questions, observe experiments conducted by William Paterson personnel, and see what a college laboratory looks like. Additionally the students were exposed to advanced, high-tech equipment often discussed in class.
Junior, Taylor Conroy said, “They did some really interesting experiments that we can’t do with the equipment at HHS. It was really cool when they put ice cream in liquid nitrogen and made Dippin’ Dots that we got to eat.”
Those who attended gained a sense of what studying chemistry in college is really like, giving students an opportunity to start thinking about potential futures involving science.
HHS science teacher, Marissa Wentworth commented, “The students responded with excitement to the seminar. They enjoyed interacting with the William Paterson University Chemistry Club students and touring the facility.”
Both HHS faculty and students agree that the seminar was interesting and beneficial to all.
