Steven Prieto, a 2013 Hawthorne High School graduate, spoke to Mrs. Clark’s English III Honors class and a select group of seniors who have applied to the school he is currently a sophomore at, Boston University. Due to the common interest shown in Boston University from the junior class, an assembly was set up for Prieto to go into detail about preparing for college, college experiences, and specifically, Boston University.
Prieto started preparing for college early on in his high school career. He stayed focused throughout his four years as an HHS Bear, but still had plenty of time to be involved in extracurricular activities. Just to rattle off a couple of his accomplishments, Prieto was the Student Council President and involved in our school’s drama department.
Prieto thanked HHS for offering certain courses that have made his college experience easier. Although he is majoring in Business Administration with a dual concentration in Operations and Technology Management as well as Organizational Behavior, he feels that taking Honors Physics and AP Physics made him better prepared for logical thinking. Although Physics and his major are not directly related, he gives credit to those courses for opening up his mind and changing his thought process.
Prieto has a long list of accomplishments. Prieto is an Admissions Ambassador which involves doing tours around campus. He is also on the Administration Student Diversity Board, Vice President of Marketing of the Class of 2017 in the School of Management, the director of public relations for the fraternity Alpha Kappa Psi, a photographer for a community service center, a teaching assistant and also works in the school’s law department office, the office of Graduate and International Programs.
Boston University helps Prieto keep focused on his path in business, but still keeps him open to exploring all types of courses. Prieto recently took a course to learn how to sail, which sparked his interest enough to earn his boating license and occasionally take his peers out on the water.
Prieto is still fairly undecided on his plans for the future. “I’m not exactly sure what I want to do just yet, but I surely have plans to be successful. To be successful in business, you have to be flexible.” He plans on building experiences and hopes to make a difference, a goal Prieto’s had since he can remember.
