Cinco De Mayo, commemorating the Mexican victory over French forces in 1865, was celebrated on May 5 at Hawthorne High School as a fundraiser for the sophomore class. While the county baseball game was being played out on the field, the class set up in the parking lot on Bamford Ave, selling delicious Mexican treats such empanadas, fajitas, and a favorite of the night Walkin’ Tacos. (Walkin’ Tacos is a bag of Doritos with Taco meat in the bag and various dressings on the side. Principal Lagrone was a big fan of these.) Class advisor Shaina Tullo commented: “The students came together with the help of their parents to create a successful fundraiser. This cultural celebration helped the community to get involved with fundraising for the class of 2017. The diversity and the community aspects of the event made it both successful and fun.”
