S.H.A.R.E. Collects for Nepal
May 11, 2015
Hawthorne High School’s club S.H.A.R.E is collecting funds to donate directly to Save the Children, an organization working to bring relief to the youth of catastrophe-stricken Nepal.
This fundraiser is being held to help the families in Nepal that went through the horrible earthquake. According to savethechildren.org, the earthquake was at a magnitude of 7.8. It struck on April 25 and was reported to be the worst in Nepal in 81 years. It took down buildings in major cities such as Kathmandu and Pokhara, as well as devastating many outlying villages. According to United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs as of May 11, 2015: 8,019 deaths and 17,866 injuries had been reported. It has been estimated by the Nepalese Prime Minister that the death toll could reach 10,000 as time passes.
Many children and families that have survived now must try to repair their lives. Families of Nepal need all the aid they can get, in order to receive the living essentials. SavetheChildren.org writes, “Hour by hour, Save the Children’s relief efforts in earthquake-shattered Nepal grow stronger – grounded in our nearly four decades of work in the impoverished country. But every hour also brings news of children in desperate need as rescue workers and our staff reach battered villages and communities.”
An estimated $423 million is needed to fund immediate needs. If you are interested in helping those in need, S.H.A.R.E. is collecting both cash and checks (made out to S.H.A.R.E.) this week through Friday May 15. For more information please see the S.H.A.R.E. adviser, Mr. Ward, in Room 220. The children of Nepal need your help now!
S.H.A.R.E advisor, Christopher Ward commented, “I am so proud of the initiative Hawthorne’s students have taken in this time of urgency. It is clear that Nepal needs our help.”
