HHS Spanish Club and Spanish classes, along with teachers Karina Rivas and Rocio Martinez,  took a trip on April 17 to New York City for a historical tour of Spanish Harlem.

The students learned about the Spanish Civil Rights movement and its leader Cesar Chavez, various poets of Hispanic heritage, and about Spanish immigrants who moved into the Harlem area during the mid-20th century. Junior Ronny Pena commented: “It was really cool to learn about how the Spanish culture integrated with American culture within a small radius of blocks in Harlem.”

Junior Marin Ulloa added: “The food was great too. We ate at a restaurant and then tried a traditional Spanish dish called tamales.” Tamales are burrito shaped but wrapped in corn husk and filled with different seasonings and chicken. The students also ate rice, beans, and either chicken or pork for lunch.

Overall, the trip was an educational and fun-filled day in NYC.
