Hawthorne Beats Pompton Lakes

Most students are aware of the huge rivalry between Hawthorne High School and Pompton Lakes High School.  This rivalry has been going on before the the coaches can remember, and it’s only grown since then.  Last year, the girls’ varsity soccer team lost to Pompton Lakes 3-0 and tied their second game 0-0.  Pompton has proven themselves as a tough team to beat for all sports. Hawthorne girls soccer beat Pompton 1-0 on the 17th of September. Sophomore Nicole Bertollo scored Hawthorne’s only goal on a penalty kick to win the game. The HHS girl’s soccer team are off to a great start this season and are extremely proud of the advances already made so early on. Boys varsity soccer also had a successful game against Pompton, beating the team 1-0 away at Pompton. The lone goal was scored on a free kick late in the second half by senior Tony Minimi. We all hope the next team playing Pompton Lakes, no matter what sport, ends with the same feeling the girls’ and boys’ soccer teams felt after their victories.
