HHS Electives: Part I

Jason Bryant, Contributor

In the past few years, many new electives have been added to the HHS curriculum. The Clarion is presenting a series of articles that will describe these electives so everyone can have a better idea of what is offered. This first article begins with a look at the Fine Arts electives.

Art I, II, and III: Ms. Russo and Mr. Rosenberg

Mr. Rosenberg teaches Art I and Ms. Russo teaches Art I, II, and III. The classes give students the opportunity to learn about important aspects of understanding and practicing art. The art room is filled with student paintings and drawings that show off the amazing talents of the school’s students.

Broadcasting: Mr. Kevin Johnson

This class has various activities for students who might like to go into television in the future.  Room 113 has been turned into a broadcasting studio with amazing cameras; the room next door serves as an editing room and houses the Tri Caster, which allows the class and the Bears Broadcasting System to televise events and activities such as the pep rally and football games.

Culinary I and II: Ms. Dockray

The Culinary class gives students the chance to cook during school hours. The class focuses on cooking and the fundamentals of food. The students cook and eat the food that they make and critique one another on the food.

Guitar: Mr. Williams

For people who do not want to be in a big band, this class is the thing. There is only one guitar class, but it is great for beginners who just want to learn those few basic notes and chords.

Instrumental Music: Mr. Williams

This class is not just for band students, but for all students that want to play any musical instrument. Instrumental Music is also good for students who want to learn how to play an instrument but do not want to be in the band. The class utilizes the school instruments to play stunning music from jazz to classical symphonies. Students who want to study music or instruments in general would have a great time in this class.

Media Arts I, II and III: Mr. Di Leonardo

These classes combine multiple types of digital arts that allow students to show their artistic talents even though they may not be handy with a brush and paint. The Media Arts room is comprised of three sections: the computer lab, the meeting area, and a studio. The computer lab allows students to learn design programs such as Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, and other Apple and Adobe applications. The meeting area gives student groups a place to gather and discuss their projects. Finally, the studio has several backdrops in different colors and is the main stage for the photography portion of the class.

Music Theory I, II, and III: Mr. Williams

The music theory class is a sanctuary for music lovers. The class starts off with music and then the lesson begins. These semester classes focus on understanding music and learning the structure of music, such as the meaning of the treble clef and how to draw and read music.

 Sculpture and Ceramics: Mr. Rosenberg

These are half-year courses. The sculpture class focuses on sculpting many different items, from kitchenware to small cars and knick-knacks. The ceramics class lets students mold, paint and craft various objects that makes this class a big hit.
