Students writing a living poem to celebrate National Day on Writing

The National Day on Writing was celebrated at HHS on October 20, 2015. This year, in the library, Mrs. Theresa DiGeronimo made an eight-foot poster that became a living poem on the floor of the Media Center.  Students and staff wrote lines of poetry to finish sentences such as: “When I write a short story I feel like…” The poem became a big collaborative simile on writing.

Mrs. DiGeronimo was happy to see so many contributors to the project. “The poem gave words to feelings about writing. It’s interesting for all of us to see expressions such as ‘When I write a text message, I feel like a tornado.’ And “When I write a love poem, I feel like a blossoming rose’ our students have a lot to say about the feelings involved in all kinds of writing and this event allowed them to share that.”

The national day was started in 2009 and is sponsored by the National Council of Teachers of English, the National Writing Project, The New York Times Learning Network, and the Teaching Channel.
